Based on the Le Mans Concept, the new Audi R8 will be in the showrooms in the first quarter of 2007, expect incredible performance from this mid engined German Supercar, but don't expect to get your hands on one quickly, the R8 has a waiting list of two years in the UK.

Powered by a 4.2-litre FSI V8 mid mounted engine (the same engine that powers the RS4 so effortlessly) the new Audi R8 maximises the use of lightweight aluminium and is built using ASF (Audi Space Frame) principles. With double wishbone suspension all-round and magical magnetic damping it becomes clear that the R8 really does owe its heritage to the five-time Le Mans winning car.

Performance is the holy grail of any supercar and the new Audi R8 certainly won't disappoint, with only 4.6 seconds needed to accelerate from 0 Â? 62 mph the R8 is 0.2 seconds quicker to the mark than its equivalent Porsche 911 competitor and with a top speed of 187 mph it is a full 8 mph faster than the same car. This does however come at a slight cost, returning only 19.3 mpg in the combined cycle, the new Audi R8 definitely falls into the binge drinker class, but then again, if you're gonna party, you may as well party in style.

Supercar performance with sports car characteristics, make for a great combination, the R8 is just as at home on a long motorway slog, or on a twisty country road. Quattro permanent four wheel drive and aerodynamic downforce combine to keep the R8 planted firmly on the black stuff, giving a feeling of absolute stability no matter where the road ahead takes you.

So, is the new Audi R8 a serious competitor for Porsche? Certainly the figures shouldn't lie, but you also need to take into account the WOW factor. Park the Audi R8 in any of the posh streets of the metropolis and you will surely attract more admiring glances than any 911 could, is this just because it's a new car? Maybe. Only time will tell, but for a first attempt, Audi must be very pleased with themselves.
