2008 New Mazda 3 Review

Mazda is a manufacturer that has always made nice looking cars and the Mazda 3 is certainly no exception, superb styling and attention to detail mark the Mazda 3 out from its rivals and with a Mazda predicted four star safety rating, the Mazda 3 should be just as safe as it is stylish.

Available in either saloon or hatchback the Mazda 3 has a choice of three petrol engines plus a diesel variant, beginning with the Mazda 3 1.4 MZR (only available on the hatchback model), this petrol unit has a power output of 84 ps and achieves a top speed of 106 mph through a five speed manual gear box. Next in the petrol range is the Mazda 3 1.6 MZR, this unit delivers 105 ps through a choice of either a five-speed manual or a four-speed Activematic gearbox, giving top speeds of 114 and 109 mph (116 and 111 mph on the saloon) respectively dependant on gearbox. Finally in the petrol range is the Mazda 3 2.0 MZR, developing 150 ps through its five speed manual gearbox the Mazda 3 MZR has a top speed of 125 mph (130 mph on the saloon). The diesel engine in the Mazda 3 1.6 MZ Â? CD has a power output of 109 ps and reaches a top speed of 113 mph (116 mph for the saloon) by way of its five-speed manual gearbox.

The Mazda 3 has four varying trim levels (three on the saloon with the omission of the S level) beginning with the Mazda 3 S, the S level of trim is available with either the 1.4 MZI, 1.6 MZI or the 1.6 MZ Â? CD engines and has amongst other things 15" steel wheels with wheel covers and 195/65 R15 tyres ( 195/65 R15 alloy wheels on Mazda 3 1.6 S) , anti-lock brake system (ABS) with electronic brake-force distribution (EBD), emergency brake assist (EBA), an AM/FM modular radio cassette player with 4 speakers, front and rear body colour bumpers, collapsible steering column, remote central door locking with deadlocking, digital clock, power-operated and heated door mirrors in black housings with driver's wide angle, dial reclining and height adjustment driver's seat, driver and passenger dual-stage front airbags, front side airbags, illuminated front ashtray, lockable illuminated glove box, manual headlight levelling, halogen headlights with headlight on reminder, high mounted stop lamp, ISOFIX child seat anchorage, immobiliser system, intrusion minimising collapsible safety brake pedals, Mazda Advanced Impact Distribution and Absorption System (MAIDAS) engineered with 'triple H' body structure to help guard occupants from impact forces, panel light control with dimmer, pollen filter, engine rev sensing power steering, rear fog light, rear heated glass window, r oof aerial, tilt and height adjustment steering wheel, driver's sun visor with covered vanity mirror and ticket holder, passenger's Sun visor with vanity mirror and a Category 1 Thatcham alarm all fitted as standard.

Next up in the Mazda 3 range is the Mazda 3 TS this trim level has front and rear curtain airbags, body coloured side mouldings, power-operated and heated door mirrors in body colour housings with driver's wide angle, body coloured door handles, a rear centre armrest and manual air conditioning all in addition or replacement to the specification of the Mazda 3 S.

Above the Mazda 3 TS is the Mazda 3 TS2, this has Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) with Traction Control System (TCS), 205/55 R16 alloy wheels, leather covered steering wheel, six-disc CD auto-changer, automatic climate control air conditioning and rear electric windows all in addition or replacement to the features on the Mazda 3 TS2.

The final trim level for the Mazda 3 is the Mazda 3 Sport, equipment on this level in addition or replacement to the Mazda TS2 level of trim includes 205/50 R17 alloy wheels, electric speed sensing power steering, front wipers with rain sensors, xenon headlights with auto on sensor, high pressure water headlight cleaning, automatic headlight leveling, Bose premium audio system with radio, 6-disc CD autochanger, six speakers, Rich bass woofer and digital amplifier with five channels of customised equalization and a Sports Appearance Package with sports grille, sports front and rear bumpers, side skirts, rear spoiler (Mazda 3 hatchback: roof spoiler; Mazda 3 saloon: lip spoiler), sports front fog lamps with all body parts in body-colour.
