2008 New Skoda Fabia Hatchback Review
You often hear people saying that things just aren't what they used to be and with Skoda this is probably a good thing, now part of the Volkswagen / Audi group the Skoda brand has taken giant leaps forward. The latest Fabia offers Volkswagen build quality and reliability at Skoda prices, making it an attractive proposition, that is, if you can get past the badge.
When VW invested in Skoda, sales were at an all time low, the Soviet Union was crumbling and many people could just not understand why Volkswagen of all people would be interested in the former Czech manufacturer. Ten years or so later and Skoda keeps going from strength to strength, sales are up year on year with new production facilities springing up worldwide and all this because Skoda now builds cars people want to drive.
The previous Fabia did well in the super mini class, its biggest advantage being its size, the competition soon picked up on this however and so called super mini's have grown ever since. The new Fabia may be very slightly larger, but this is not the reason why most people will be attracted to it. Quality will be. The new Fabia looks better both inside and out, the cabin looks and feels more expensive, the exterior also looks much better finished, panels fit snugly and the paintwork has a deeper gloss shine, all things that set the Fabia apart in a budget marketplace.
With new three cylinder petrol and diesel engines being offered at entry level or larger four cylinder engines further up the range, Skoda have covered all the bases when it comes to the Fabia and indeed many are saying the smaller engines are the pick of the bunch.
In all the new Fabia is everything it used to be and more, it's still a budget super mini, still at the right price, the overall package however is improved and with the help of VW, Skoda are now producing desirable cars, who would have thought it?
