2008 New Skoda Octavia Review
If you want a little bit more for your hard earned cash you could do a lot worse than taking a look at the Skoda Octavia, Ford Mondeo space for the price of a Vauxhall Astra, yet another reason why the former communist brand keeps proving its doubters wrong.
The original Octavia has been credited as the car that changed Skoda's fortunes, initial demand outstripped supply, with both fleet and retail customers showing a level of interest that took dealers by surprise, when the second generation Octavia launched, interest levels were just as high and is there any wonder, VW quality and class leading space make the new Octavia a more than credible alternative to its rivals, indeed in 2005 the Skoda Octavia Ambiente 1.6 FSI won the Whatcar? small family car of the year award, quite an achievement when you consider its opposition were the likes of the Ford Mondeo, the Toyota Avensis and the Peugeot 407.
Sharing the same chassis as the Volkswagen Golf albeit with a larger body, the Octavia drives and handles well and if anything the ride is more subtle and smoother than its VW cousin, this may in some part may be due to the state of the Czech roads, which weÂ?re told bear a remarkable similarity to our own in the UK (potholed and decaying?).
Cabin quality is everything you would expect from a Volkswagen, even though it is a Skoda, and fit and finish will not disappoint either. Combine the overall quality with a large selection of engines and trim levels and it is little wonder that the Octavia ticks so many boxes for so many people.
Like the looks of the Skoda Octavia why not check out the Audi A3, the Citroen C4, the Mazda 3, the Peugeot 307, the Renault Megane, the Seat Leon, the Seat Toledo, the Seat Altea or the Vauxhall Astra.
