2008 New BMW 5 Series Touring Review

The BMW 5 Series Saloon raised a few eyebrows when it was launched and it is not unfair to say it polarised opinion with its design, especially at the rear end.

Not so with the new BMW 5 Series Touring, because of the necessity of the tailgate, the touring seems to have stolen the looks that its sibling strived so hard to achieve, the front end may be very similar but when you move round to the rear, you notice that the lumpy rear wheel arches aren't there, follow round further and the addition of an almost X3esque tailgate completes the transformation from saloon to estate and in many peoples opinions from ugly duckling to swan. Sleeker and more aggressive looking, the new BMW 5 Series Touring has all the benefits of the saloon, yet even though it is an estate, it manages to look less bulky than its sibling.

Slightly longer and wider than the model it replaced the new BMW 5 Series Touring has more room all round for both the passengers and in the load area, in fact when you drop the rear seats the 5 Series Touring has a very respectable capacity of 1650 litres.

With a host of passive and active safety systems including DSC+, it is little wonder the new BMW 5 Series scores a respectable four out of five stars in its Euro ncap safety rating, giving you the peace of mind that you are not only travelling in style, you will also arrive at your destination safely.

With most of the specifications on the vehicles remaining the same across both the saloon and the Touring models, apart from the differences in the load space area such as securing rings in the luggage compartment and a lockable storage compartment under the load floor, the new BMW 5 Series Touring is not just a load lugger, but a variation on a well proven theme
