American cars have only seemed to appeal to a select few in the UK, however, this may be about to change with the introduction of the Dodge Caliber, an American car with the European market in mind.

For many years the European car press have rubbished Johnny foreigner for the build quality, performance and handling of their vehicles, starting way back, the Japanese first became the brunt of our jibes, as it became obvious that the cars they were producing were far from second class our attentions shifted to the eastern block countries. Again as opinions moved the major European manufacturers began to buy out these smaller competitors and the product improved dramatically, so as with all comedians whose material has dried up we find the need to move on to our next Â?victimsÂ?. Korea and America for whatever reasons have filled this new gap, but at the end of the day do they warrant this negative attention.

Alright the new Dodge Caliber is not a match for the Volkswagen Golf or the Ford Focus, but then again the new Dodge Caliber comes at a price more akin to a Polo or a Fiesta and because of this, it may just be one of the first American cars with the wherewithal to compete in a market that is dominated by the Europeans and Japanese.

OK, you won't be hearing journalists marvelling about under-steer, over-steer or the feedback you receive from the steering as the new Caliber is taken to the limit of its traction, but do you know anybody apart from a handful of motoring journo's who actually drive like this on a regular basis.

The styling of the new Dodge Caliber won't be to everyone's taste and the clever people who hold the multi million pound advertising purse strings have tried to exploit this fact by claiming the Caliber is Â?anything but cuteÂ?. It may or may not be cute, but if the styling is to your taste one thing is certain, the new Dodge Caliber represents excellent value for money.

So down to the nitty gritty, what do you get if you go for a new Dodge Caliber? The answer is simple really, quite a lot. There is a choice of three engines, two petrol's and one diesel. First up in the petrol range is a 1.8 litre unit that has a power output of 148bhp. The other petrol engine has a 2.0 litre capacity and returns 154bhp. The final engine in the Dodge Caliber range is a 2.0 litre diesel that Dodge have purchased from Volkswagen - being a sister company to Daimler/Chrysler you would have thought they could find a Mercedes engine fit for purpose Â? this engine may have the lowest power output at 138bhp, but this should provide plenty enough grunt for most.

Trim levels for the new Dodge Caliber start with the SE model, at this level standard equipment includes power folding exterior mirrors, remote keyless entry, a sliding central console, reclining rear seats, air-conditioning, and the Chill Zone (a cooled beverage storage bin that can hold up to four 20-oz. bottles or cans). Move up to the Caliber SXT and the standard features list also includes cruise control, front fog lights, 17-inch wheels, leather upholstery and tyre pressure monitoring. Top of the new Dodge Caliber range is the SXT Sport if you choose this model you also get 18-inch wheels six-disc CD radio with MusicGate (two speakers that swing down from the tailgate when open to supply tunes when you are on the beach or having a picnic) and centre console colour coding with the seats.
