2008 Mercedes C-Class Saloon (OBSL) ReviewOver twenty years ago Mercedes started expanding its range of vehicles with a move into the compact luxury saloon market, the vehicle that launched this move in direction was the 190E, the predecessor of the current C-Class. With the interior of the C-Class receiving some criticism, changes were made in 2005, a comprehensive restyling brought the model up to date with the rest of the range, new gauges, controls and seats have all been added to give an overall improved driving experience. The latest C-Class has better handling, an improved suspension system and more precise steering, when you combine this with tastefully reserved styling, superb engineering and exceptional comfort the newest C-Class is everything you would expect from Mercedes, only in a slightly smaller package. With a host of passive and active safety systems, including Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Brake Assist (BAS), Electronic Stability Programme (ESP), Acceleration Skid Control (ASR) and six airbags all fitted as standard to all models it is little wonder that the C-Class scores a maximum five out of five stars in its Euro ncap safety rating for adult occupancy. The Mercedes C-Class has a choice of six petrol engines and three diesels. Entry level for the petrol derivative is the C 180 Kompressor, this is powered by a 143 bhp, 1.8 litre supercharged inline four cylinder unit, 0 Â? 62 mph is achieved in 9.7 seconds and the C180 has a top speed of 139 mph. The C 200 Kompressor again has a 1.8 litre supercharged inline four cylinder, but the power output is increased to 163 bhp, this results in a time of 9.1 seconds to accelerate from 0 Â? 62 mph and a top speed of 145 mph. The C 230 has a 204 bhp, 2.5 litre V6, 0 Â? 62 mph drops to 8.4 seconds and a top speed of 152 mph can be achieved. A 231 bhp, 3.0 litre V6 powers the C 280, with a top speed electronically limited to 155 mph, the C 280 can go from 0 Â? 62 mph in 7.2 seconds. The C 350 has a 3.5 litre, 272 bhp V6, 0 Â? 62 mph for the C 350 is 6.4 seconds and again the top speed has been electronically limited to 155 mph. Finally in the petrol line-up is the 367 bhp, 5.5 litre V8 that powers the awesome C 55 AMG, this unit powers you from 0 Â? 62 mph in just 5.2 seconds, as with the C 280 and C 350 the top speed of the C 55 AMG has been electronically limited to 155 mph. The C 180 Kompressor, the C 200 Kompressor and the C 230 all transmit their power via six speed manual gearboxes. The C 280 and C 350 both have the Mercedes 7G-Tronic 7-speed automatic gearbox and the C 55 AMG puts its power down through a five-speed automatic. The diesel powered derivatives begin with the C 200 CDi, powered by a 2150 cc inline four cylinder that develops 122 bhp the C 200 CDi accelerates from 0 Â? 62 mph in 11.7 seconds and has a top speed of 129 mph. Next up is the C 220 CDi, this vehicle is again powered by the 2150 cc inline four cylinder, this unit however develops 150 bhp reducing the time to accelerate from 0 Â? 62 mph to 10.1 seconds, the top speed increases to 139 mph accordingly. Finally in the diesel range is the C 320 CDi, this vehicle has a 3.0 litre V6 with a power output of 224 bhp, 0 Â? 62 mph is achieved in a staggering 6.9 seconds keep your foot down and you will top out at an electronically limited 155 mph. The C 200 CDi and C 220 CDi both apply their power through five speed automatic gearboxes, the C 320 CDi has the Mercedes 7G-Tronic 7-speed automatic gearbox. All the diesel engines in the C-Class range are EU4 compliant. The C 180 Kompressor, C 200 Kompressor, C 230, C 280, C 200 CDi and C 220 CDi all come as standard in Classic trim, all of these vehicles can be upgraded to either Classic SE, Elegance SE/Avantgarde SE or Sport Edition for a premium. The C 350 and C 320 CDi are either Elegance SE or Avantgarde SE in standard trim, both can be upgraded to Sport Edition again for a premium. The best selling car series in the Mercedes range may have been improved, but it doesn't just stop there, you can expect to see a further face lift in 2007, with Whatcar touting it as a possible contender for car of the year in 2008. This incarnation will be split, with one model targeting the traditional Mercedes driver and another sportier model with more aggressive styling, meaning Audi and BMW will have another competitor trying to vie for the attentions of the younger driver. The new model will be launched at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 2007 and many people are already saying that it looks like a mini S-Class (quite a compliment), but as with all new models from the premium german manufacturer you will need to get your order in early to avoid the dissapointment of a long wait. Like the looks of the new Mercedes C-Class why not check out the BMW 3 Series, the Alfa Romeo 159, the Lexus IS 220D, the Lexus IS 250, the Volvo S40, the Jaguar X-type, the Volvo S60 or the Audi A4.
