2008 Mercedes ML-Class ReviewIntroduced back in 1998, the Mercedes M-Class had a very mixed reception. Popular enough in the states, the M-Class didn't quite cut the mustard in the European market, criticised as not being up to the normal standards you would expect from Mercedes. Not so anymore, the new M-Class has been redesigned and face lifted and the result brings the M-Class back into line with the rest of the Mercedes range. Vast improvements have been made to the M-Class, both to the quality and to the overall performance, the new M-Class handles better both on and off road and the cheap feel of the cabin (one of the major complaints owners of the M-Class had) has now gone. Another major change is the loss of two seats, the ML is now strictly just a five seater. The M-Class now has a choice of three petrol or two diesel engines. Entry level for the petrol units is the ML 350, this is powered by a 272 bhp, 3.5 litre V6, 0 Â? 62 mph is achieved in 8.4 seconds and the ML 350 tops out at 140 mph. Next in line is the ML 500, under the bonnet you have a 5.0 litre V8 with a power output of 306 bhp that can accelerate you from 0 Â? 62 mph in 6.9 seconds and will achieve a top speed of 149 mph. Top of the ML range is the ML 63 AMG, this features a new 6.3 litre V8 that pushes out a massive 510 bhp, with a top speed that has been electronically limited to 155 mph the ML 63 AMG launches you from 0 Â? 62 mph in just five seconds. The diesel engine that powers the ML 280 CDi is a 3.0 litre V6 that develops 190 bhp, the time it takes to accelerate from 0 Â? 62 mph is 9.8 seconds and the ML 280 CDi has a top speed of 125 mph. The other offering in the diesel category is the ML 320 CDi, again powered by a 3.0 litre V6, this unit has a power output of 224 bhp and can accelerate from 0 Â? 62 mph in a time of 8.6 seconds, keep your foot pressed to the floor and the ML 320 CDi will finally top out at 133 mph. All models in the ML line-up transmit their power through the Mercedes 7G-Tronic 7-speed automatic gearbox. With this choice of engines and three different trim levels it shouldn't be too difficult to find just the model to suit both you and your families needs. Like the looks of the Mercedes M-Class why not check out the BMW X5, the Land Rover Discovery, the Range Rover Sport, the Volvo XC90 the Lexus RX 350, the Toyota Land cruiser, the VW Touareg or the Lexus RX 400H.
