2007 New BMW M5 Review

For those who find they need the performance of a Ferrari, but want to take the whole family out for a drive, choices seem to be slightly restricted, especially if your six numbers didnÂ?t come up on the national lottery, luckily BMW have decided to resolve this conundrum and it comes in the form of the BMW M5. Everything you need in a family saloon or estate with the added bonus of a totally mad powerplant, 400 hp for when youÂ?re just taking it easy, or, at the push of a button, 507hp, what more could you want?

It may look understated in many peopleÂ?s eyes, after all it is just another family car, but this one is family car with a difference and that difference is the engine and associated technology that powers the M5. A five litre V10 sits under the bonnet, which in normal driving mode delivers a more than respectable four hundred brake horses, but, and itÂ?s a big but, if required you can tap into a massive 507 bhp at just the touch of a button, this takes the M5 from being an extremely powerful car, to a full on super car, a super car that match the likes of Ferrari at a fraction of the cost.

Drawing from the experience it has gained in Formula 1, the new M5 has been criticised for being slightly over complicated, with a huge amount of different settings for the gearbox, suspension, engine management and steering it is a good job the M5 is fitted with an Mdrive function that lets you to save your favourite settings, allowing you to easily access the stored settings via a button on the steering wheel.

With all this performance the M5 suffers when it comes to economy, indeed it is possible to get down to single figures in the mpg department when driven hard and even on a run only expect to return mileage in the low to mid twenties per gallon, combine this with a relatively small 70 litre tank and you will find yourself racking up nectar points faster than Posh Spice on a shopping trip, that said, this isnÂ?t the car to have if your looking to save the planet.
