2008 New Lexus GS 450H Review
Is it possible to combine the acceleration of a BMW 540i with the fuel economy of a Volkswagen Golf? Well, according to Lexus the GS 450H does just that. As more and more manufacturers invest time and effort into developing cleaner, more fuel-efficient diesel engines, the Japanese manufacturer Lexus has decided to take a totally different route and if they have their way, the diesel engine may go the way of the Woolly Mammoth. The Lexus GS 450H is powered by both a 3.5 litre V6 petrol engine and a high output electric motor, Lexus claim that this combination offers the performance of a V8 petrol powered vehicle with the economy of a family saloon. Performance is certainly up there, with the GS 450H accelerating from 0 Â? 60 mph in less than six seconds, seriously quick. Keep your foot down and the GS 450H takes you up to an electronically limited top speed of 155 mph and it seems to do this without any noticeable gear changes, this is achieved by using a continuously variable automatic transmission, giving the impression of one long gear with no obvious audible change. Fuel economy is greatly aided by the way the Lexus uses its different power sources, at start up or at lower speeds the high output electric motor runs independently, as the speed increases a combination of both electric and petrol power is used until eventually the petrol engine takes over. When driving normally the power is split between driving the rear wheels and recharging the batteries that supply the electric motor. This also happens during deceleration and braking meaning that there is never a need to take the vehicle off the road to charge the maintenance free battery.
