2008 New Lexus RX 400H Review
Â?Technically, it must be said, this car is brilliant.Â? Not my words, but the words of the respected motoring journalist, TV presenter and anti tree hugger, Jeremy Clarkson. Praise indeed, especially when you realise he was talking about the Lexus RX 400H, a petrol / electric hybrid. The Lexus RX 400H is the first SUV to give you the best of both worlds, low emissions and high fuel efficiency, combined with the performance normally associated with a high powered petrol engine. So how is it achieved? The Lexus Hybrid Synergy Drive® system combines a 3.3 litre V6 petrol engine with a high voltage battery, a generator and not one, but two high power electric motors. The first electric motor has an output of 165 bhp and supplies power to the front wheels, this motor is used at start up or at lower speeds and when used as the sole power source emissions are zero. With an increase in speed the RX 400H maximises fuel efficiency by using petrol power, electric power or a combination of both, seamlessly switching between power sources by the use of extremely clever technology. Normal driving results in the power supplied by the petrol engine being split between giving drive and powering the generator, which in turn charges the high voltage battery, meaning you never have to take the car off the road in order to charge it up. As the car slows down and comes to a halt, the petrol engine automatically cuts out, further reducing those polar cap melting emissions. Take the RX 400H off the beaten track and the second electric motor automatically kicks in, this unit is positioned at the rear axle and gives electric powered 4x4 capability. Power is also channelled back to the battery when the car is decelerating or braking by converting kinetic into electrical energy. The petrol / electric combination used on the RX 400H has a combined power output of 269 bhp. 0 Â? 62 mph is achieved in an incredible 7.6 seconds, keep your foot down and the Lexus will take you to a maximum speed of 124 mph. You don't only save the planet with the RX 400H, you can also save yourself money, not only do you benefit from class leading fuel economy figures, but with the RX 400H currently exempt from the London congestion charge you won't be funding Ken's next Mayoral party. With fantastic build quality, great residuals and all the kit you would expect with a Lexus, you really can have the best of both worlds when you sit behind the wheel of an RX 400H.
