2008 Mercedes C Class Coupe ReviewThe Mercedes C Class Sports Coupe is the baby of the C Class range and as such is the entry-level model, pitched to take sales away from the BMW 1 Series and the Audi A3. Appealing to the younger end of the market the Mercedes C Class Sports Coupe has its own styling although it remains firmly in the C Class mould. From the front it is unmistakably a C Class even though the three-pointed star is planted squarely in the middle of the grille in keeping with all other Mercedes Coupe's. At the rear it's all change, a glass clad tailgate and distinctive light clusters distinguish the Sports Coupe from its siblings. Entry level and also the cheapest model in the whole of the C Class range is the C 160 Sports Coupe, powered by a 122 bhp, 1.8 litre in line four cylinder petrol engine the C 160 accelerates from 0 Â? 62 mph in 11.4 seconds and has a top speed of 128 mph. Two supercharged models follow, the C 180 Kompressor and the C 200 Kompressor, both use 1.8 litre inline four cylinder supercharged units that develop 143 and 163 bhp respectively. 0 Â? 62 mph is achieved in 9.7 seconds in the C 180, 9.1 seconds in the C 200, top speeds of 139 and 145 mph can be achieved in the respective vehicles. The C 230 is powered by a 204 bhp, 2.5 litre V6, this has a top speed of 150 mph and reaches 62 mph from a standing start in 8.4 seconds. The largest petrol engine in the range powers the C 350 Sports Coupe, this 272 bhp, 3.5 litre V6 has an electronically limited top speed of 155 mph and accelerates from 0 Â? 62 mph in just 6.4 seconds. All petrol models transmit their power through six speed manual gearboxes apart from the C 350 that has the Mercedes 7G-Tronic 7-speed automatic gearbox. Two diesel models are available in the Sports Coupe range, the C 200 CDi and the C 220 CDi. The C 220 CDi is powered by a 122 bhp, 2148 cc inline four cylinder common rail diesel engine, it takes 11.7 seconds for the C 200 CDi to accelerate from 0 to 62 mph and a top speed of 129 mph can be achieved. The C 220 CDi has the same engine as the 200, but with the power increased to 150 bhp the time taken to accelerate from 0 Â? 62 mph is reduced to 10.3 seconds and the top speed increases to 139 mph. Both diesel units transmit their power to the tarmac via six speed manual gearboxes, although there is the option of the five speed automatic gearbox. With anti lock braking (ABS), brake assist (BAS) and six airbags fitted as standard to all models, the C Class Sports Coupe is a great place to begin your journey with Mercedes.
